Generations and allowances
What counts as a generation, which actions spend one, and why previewing is free while rendering and exporting are not.
Your plan carries a monthly allowance of generations: the AI actions that cost real money to run. Understanding which actions spend one is the difference between a comfortable month and hitting a wall on the 18th.
What spends a generation
Broadly, anything that calls a model or a renderer:
- Generating a content plan: by far the largest single spend, because a plan is eight tabs produced in one run
- Regenerating a tab, or retrying a failed plan
- Generating a long-form script
- Generating an AI image
- Rendering carousel slides or a poster to final images
- Rendering a reel
- Analysing a website during onboarding
What is free
Everything else, and it is most of the product:
- Browsing the idea pool, saving, pinning and dismissing
- Editing anything: captions, slides, plans, brand profile
- Laying out and previewing an asset in Studio
- Scheduling, moving and publishing posts
- Replying to comments and DMs
- Running automations
The line is: does this call a model or encode a video? If not, it is free.
Previewing is free, exporting is not
This is the split that surprises people in Studio. You can build a whole reel and watch it back without spending anything; the render is the paid step, because that is the part that actually costs.
The same logic applies to carousels: laying out ten slides is free, turning them into ten finished images is not.
Where you stand
Your remaining allowance is shown in the app, and in Settings → Billing.
Running out
Running out does not break your workspace. Scheduled posts keep publishing, automations keep running, your content stays where it is. What stops is generating new AI output until the allowance resets or you top up.
See buying more generations and when you hit a limit.
Where it went
The two things that consume an allowance fastest are regenerating plan tabs repeatedly and rendering reels. If a month ran out early, it was almost certainly one of those.
For plan tabs specifically, editing is free and usually faster than a third regeneration. See regenerating, retrying and cancelling.
